The GT3 Grand Prix of Mosport
THE AMERICAN LE MANS SERIES SATURDAY AUGUST 18, 2001 PIT NOTES: Page 4
At 5:00, checkered flag.
Top three in class:
#1-P900 Rinaldo Capello 1:08.222, #2-P900 Frank Biela 1:08.408, #50-P900 Jan Magnussen 1:09.671 #5-P675 Didier de Radigues 1:13.501, #11-P675 Claudia Huertgen 1:16.094, #57-P675 John Graham 1:16.861
For driver Rinaldo Capello (#1-P900 Audi
R8) this is his third pole of the year, and seventh of his career. For
Team Audi it is their fourth pole in 5 ALMS races this season. Didier
de Radigues (#5-P675 Reynard 01Q/Judd) has his second pole in a row,
and second career ALMS pole.
Andy Pilgrim (#4-GTS Chevrolet Corvette
C5-R) “The track changed drastically since this morning. It wasn’t
just a qualifying session for us, we were using it to get our race
setups.”
Ron Fellows (#3-GTS Chevrolet Corvette
C5-R) “The car was temperamental. Something happened between tech
inspection and the pits. That a first! It felt like the clutch was
cooked and there we no consistent traction on the back tires. The pit
chief noticed something not right as the car entered pit lane (after
the first out lap).” (about the race) “Starting position doesn’t
matter, we know we have good car. Starting at the back is not a big
deal. The Saleen (#26-GTS) is running soft tires, (and when you) look
at practice times we’ll be ok. Its exciting for the locals – my
track record is still safe so that’s nice. The crew had been
pumped, but this isn’t a NASCAR race – we’ll get it fixed (for
tomorrow)”.
John Graham (#57-P675 Reynard 01Q/Judd)
“(since this morning) the air density and humidity were a huge
factor. It might have greased up a little bit out there too. We had
misfiring problems, did some work on the brake and damper work, but we
were still faster than we practiced this morning. This wasn’t just
qualifying for us.”
JJ Lehto (#42-GT BMW M3 GTR) "It was
a surprisingly slow track compared to what we had in the morning.
There were some races in between and that made the circuit much more
slippery, so it was difficult to find grip. We are happy with
the car for the race, after we have been playing with the setup a lot
this weekend. All of our mechanics have been working very hard to get
the car closer to what Jörg and I like to drive."
Jörg Müller (#42-GT BMW M3 GTR)
"It's quite close, isn't it? Both of the cars are quite
equal. I'm happy that we're pole position, but it doesn't
matter. For the race, it's important how long the tires last and
how the crew works during pit stops, so the race is much longer than
just 20 minutes of qualifying."
Fredrik Ekblom (#43-GT BMW M3 GTR)
"Dirk has been really quick all weekend, and there's just nothing
in between the team cars. We'll be racing hard tomorrow for the
win, for sure. The track seems to change a lot, from hour to
hour and from 10 minutes to the next 10 minutes. But we're
fairly happy with the car. I think we have a very good chance
for Dirk and myself tomorrow."
Dirk Müller (#43-GT BMW M3 GTR) "I'm
happy for the team, doing one and two. I'm a little bit
disappointed I didn't get a clear lap, but it's a really close margin
between one and two. I would be happy to be on pole, but I'm
more happy for the team to be one and two. Thanks a lot,
guys!"
Butch Leitzinger (#16-P R&S Mk IIIC/Lincoln)
“I’m pleased with the car and the team is happy to be here.
We’ve tested over the last several months at tracks that are not
necessarily a good comparison. I expected to be a few seconds off, and
it’s a nice surprise to be in the thick of it.”
