ALMS Race Cars Drive in Downtown Atlanta

Several of the exotic race cars that will race in Saturday's Audi presents Petit Le Mans Oct. at Road Atlanta will "make a lap" of downtown Atlanta on Tuesday.

The cars will stage at the corner of West Peachtree and Ralph McGill. At 11:45 a.m., they'll begin their run to Centennial Olympic Park, led by two Atlanta police motorcycles and a Hall County rescue vehicle.  Hall County firefighters will be soliciting donations for the New York Firefighter's 9-11 Disaster Relief Fund - to aid their New York City counterparts and their families - during the Audi presents Petit Le Mans.

The cars will travel south on W. Peachtree, south on Peachtree, then turn right on Ellis Street. Then they'll take a right on Carnegie Way, a left on International Blvd, then left on Centennial Olympic Park Drive and will follow this around the park, turning right on to Marietta Street (going right in front of the CNN building) and taking a final right back on to International Boulevard where they will then stop and be rolled into the park.

The cars will be on display in the north Plaza (the Game Plaza) from Noon until 1:30 p.m.  Top drivers from the American Le Mans Series will be available for interviews.

The race:

The Audi presents Petit Le Mans is the season finale for the American Le Mans Series. Practice starts Wednesday, with qualifying on Friday and the race starts at Noon on Saturday, Oct. 6th. The Audi presents Petit Le Mans will last for 10 hours, or 1,000 miles, whichever comes first.

The Audi presents Petit Le Mans will determine many driving, team and manufacturer titles for the season. It is also a qualifying event for the 2002 running of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, with the class winners receiving automatic invitations to compete in the French classic. The race was designed to be a smaller version of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and in only four years, Audi presents Petit Le Mans has become one of the most important sports car races in the world, and a stellar field of 47 cars and more than 100 drivers will compete in this year's version.

CARS: Four classes of American Le Mans Series sports cars: Le Mans Prototype (LMP) 900; LMP 675; Grand Touring Sport (GTS); Grand Touring (GT).
