GT BATTLE LOOKS HOT FOR ELMS FINALE!
Brackley, UK, Friday 24th August 2001: In the final round of the
European Le Mans Series (ELMS), to be held at the Autodromo di Vallelunga,
Italy, over the weekend of 1st /2nd September, an intriguing battle looms
with winners from the previous two rounds challenging for victory in the
highly competitive GT class.
Italian flags will be waving with fans supporting home grown talent,
Maurizio Possumato driving in the 61 PK Sport and Fabio Babini in the
Freisinger Motorsport Porsche. Both teams are set to challenge for top
honours in the race.
Robin Liddell of PK Sport and his co-pilot Mike Youles, currently leading
the GT class driving the number 60 car, face stiff competition from the
Freisinger Motorsport Porsche, winners of the Le Mans 2002 qualifying
round held in Estoril. Also buoyant from an impressive performance in the
previous round are the Spanish Paco Orti Racing. With the classy Wolfgang
Kaufmann at the wheel anything is possible, they are looking to improve on
their third place in class and finish the season with a win. In the GTS
class there's a head to head between the Saleens of Franz Konrad and RML,
the outcome of this dual is anyone's guess!
The 'on-track' action starts on Friday 31st August with an open test
session between 14:15 and 16:15 for all ELMS competitors. The real battle
begins on Saturday 1st September with combined qualifying practice at
11:15, with official qualifying for the GTS and GT classes taking place at
15:30 followed by the LMP's at 16:20.
The ELMS motto 'For The Fans' means that, unlike Formula 1, there will be
an open paddock throughout the weekend allowing spectators to watch the
teams prepare cars such as the Panoz LMP1 Roadster S and Saleen S7. On
Sunday morning fans will be able to mingle with the drivers during the
autograph session and watch the impressive skills of highly trained
drivers in the demonstration laps taking place on the circuit.
The circuit has been designed for the spectators with the grandstand
offering a view of at least 50% of the action. Race day tickets
include access to the paddock and grandstand. The 2h45m race commences at
13:00 on Sunday 2nd September.
