American Le Mans Series Notes of Interest

AMERICAN LE MANS SERIES NOTES OF INTEREST

** BACK TO BACK EVENTS -- The American Le Mans Series will run events on back-to-back weekends for the only time this season over the next two weekends.

The first event will be the series' only Canadian appearance of the year with this Sunday's GT3 Grand Prix at Mosport, to be run at Mosport International Raceway in Bowmanville, Ont., just east of Toronto. The following weekend, the series will race in the American Midwest for the first time ever when it appears at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio, on Saturday, Aug. 25.

Many of the series' international drivers will take advantage of the short break between the two races to do some sightseeing while remaining in North America. Audi driver Tom Kristensen, for example, has rented a motorhome and brought his family over from his residence in Monaco. After the Mid-Ohio race, they will begin a journey across the United States, ending the trip in California with the Sep. 9 ALMS event at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.

Both the Mosport and Mid-Ohio events will be televised live by NBC Sports at 2 p.m. (EDT) on their respective dates. In addition, the live race broadcasts of the American Le Mans Series Radio Web can be heard online at www.americanlemans.com.

** TWO WOMEN RACING AT MOSPORT -- The field of drivers for this weekend's American Le Mans Series event at Canada's Mosport International Raceway will include two women, both competing in the LMP 675 class for smaller Prototypes. Series regular Milka Duno of Venezuela, who drives for Dick Barbour Racing, will be joined in the field by Claudia Huertgen of Germany, who will drive for Roock-KnightHawk Racing.

Duno, who formerly competed in the Women's Global GT Series, will team with John Graham of Canada in a Reynard 01Q-Judd machine for the Mosport race. She and Graham, along with Didier de Radigues, took the LMP 675 class win in the two most recent ALMS races. For Mosport and beyond, the Barbour team will run two cars, and de Radigues will partner with new
Barbour driver Bruno Lambert in the other car.

Huertgen, an accomplished road racer in Europe, is no stranger to ALMS competition, having made six starts on the series in the past. Her most recent race was in March at Sebring, where she was part of the LMP 675 class-winning team driving the same Lola B2K-Nissan she will be in at Mosport. She also drove for the team in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Her driving partner at Mosport will be Steven Knight, who normally drives in ALMS events with Mel Hawkins.

The scenario will repeat itself at Mid-Ohio, as Roock-KnightHawk has entered Huertgen in that event as well.

  ** ALMS DRIVERS TO MEET FANS IN CANADA -- Many drivers from the American Le Mans Series will meet fans and participate in an autograph session Wednesday night at a popular spot near Mosport International Raceway.

Haugen's Cruise Night, which is the largest weekly car cruise in North America, will take place from 6 p.m. until dusk at Haugen's Chicken and Ribs. American Le Mans Series show cars will be on display, and drivers will be on hand as well.

Haugen's is located in Manchester, Ont., on Highway 12 at exit 7a.

** WASHINGTON ANNOUNCEMENT GENERATES BUZZ -- The announcement last week that the American Le Mans Series will hold an event next July in Washington, D.C., has generated an incredible amount of interest in the event.

The series will race on a 1.7-mile temporary circuit located on the grounds of RFK Stadium on July 21, 2002. The event will be known as the National Grand Prix of Washington, D.C.

National Grand Prix Holdings, LLC, the promoter of the event, has established an event website at www.nationalgrandprix.com. In addition, a special toll-free patron reservation number has been set up at 1-888-456-8448. Calling the number now guarantees first availability to ticket purchases before they go on sale to the general public.

** MINI LE MANS COMING TO SAN JOSE -- As has become a tradition when the American Le Mans Series races at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, the downtown area of nearby San Jose, Calif., will be the site for the "Mini Le Mans" event on Wednesday, Sept. 5.

Cars from the ALMS and other series racing that weekend will do parade laps around Cesar Chavez Park beginning at noon, and will then be on display as drivers meet fans and sign autographs. The event has been very popular the past two years, with many race fans making plans to come out and see the cars and drivers. In addition, many downtown workers visit the event during their lunch breaks.

The Monterey Sports Car Championships, Presented by Mazda, will be held at the raceway on Sunday, Sept. 9.
