AUTOMATIC QUALIFICATION FOR LE MANS 2002 AWAITS CLASS WINNERS AT ESTORIL 1000KM.
Brackley, UK, Friday 22nd June 2001: The third round of the European Le Mans Series takes place in Estoril, Portugal, over the weekend of 14th/15th July and carries with it, not only the prestige of winning, but automatic qualification for the 2002 Le Mans 24 Hour race. Three entry places are up for grabs in this 1000km event, for the winning prototype, GTS and GT cars. It also carries a considerable prize fund for winners in all categories.
John Macdonald, Executive Director of the European Le Mans Series explains, "there is a great deal on offer for teams competing in the Estoril 1000km. The honour of winning at a classic endurance distance, substantial prize money, an impressive TV and marketing package and a superb circuit layout with state-of-the-art facilities. Add to this an automatic qualification for next years Le Mans and its not surprising that we anticipate the grid to exceed 30 cars. Some of the entries such as the LMP 675 of Didier Bonnet Racing are new to the European Le Mans Series, they recognise the marketing and racing potential of the ELMS and we are delighted that they have decided to join us."
"The television package includes live coverage on Sky Sports 3, a highlights programme on Eurosport and live race day coverage with pre event build-up on Portuguese TV station RTP2."
Leading the Series after two rounds is the 2001 Le Mans winning Audi R8 driver Tom Kristensen.
