Donington
Park, Friday 13th April 2001: Another
Audi 1-2-3 with a twist in Friday mornings free practice. Rinaldo Capello
and Tom Kristensen led the way by over a second with the Gulf Audi of
Johansson and Smith upsetting the status quo by splitting the two works
cars, pushing Biela and Pirro into third place.
The
Chrysler Oreca of Dalmas and Beretta again proved to be the best of the rest
and was only three tenths behind Johansson and Smith which will probably
have the Audi drivers looking over their shoulders in tomorrows race.
The Pescarolo Sport Courage C60 was fifth, just ahead of the David
Brabham, Jan Magnussen works Panoz. The
Ascari A410 of Collins and Lupberger was just behind the Westward Racing
Panoz of Cochran and Boss. The
second Ascari of Le Marie, Zwart and Toivenen suffered a series of problems,
which resulted in the car sitting in the garage as the mechanics worked
feverishly for most of the hour long session. The
two LMP675 cars fought hard to set the fastest time in the class and at the
flag it was the Rowan Racing Pilbeam MP484 of O’Connell and Carway who
took the honours. In the GTS
category the Konrad Team Saleen car of Franz Konrad and Oliver Gavin took
the top spot in 10th place overall.
In the GT class the BMW’s were dominant again with the M3 GTR of
Fredrik Ekblom and Dirk Muller ahead of teammates JJ Lehto and Jorg Muller.
Alex Job Racings Porsche 911 GT3 of Randy Pobst and Christian Menzel
was the nearest car to the BMW’s, just four tenths adrift of Ekblom and
Muller. Qualifying
for Saturdays race will take place in two half hour sessions on Friday
afternoon. 15:30 sees the GTS
and GT classes take to the track and then the Prototypes get their chance at
16:20. Donington
