Braselton, Ga., - 9th April 2001. The
forthcoming British round of the European Le Mans Series, to be held on
Easter Saturday, 14th April, sees the Panoz Motor Sports team transfer two
race cars, 17 tons of equipment and 20 team members across the
"Pond" for the start of nearly three months away from its home
base at Road Atlanta, Georgia. The team will be temporarily based in Britain from now until after the 24 Hours of Le Mans event on 16th/17th June and, during that time, will visit Belgium, France and Spain in the course of its race and test program. Panoz's international driver line-up is looking forward to racing at the English track for many reasons, not least that it is a track they all know well from years past. The 2.5 mile (4.023km) former Grand Prix circuit flows through undulating, scenic countryside, has both fast and slow corners and superb spectator viewing. Dane Jan Magnussen, who will be driving the Panoz LMP 07 #50 with partner David Brabham of Australia, has fond memories of Donington from his all-conquering F3 Championship year: "I am really looking forward to going there again as it's a great circuit. We are not sure yet how the new car will be, but are much more confident of repeating how things went at Texas rather than Sebring! The Panoz LMP 07 certainly doesn't like the bumps so it's an immediate advantage that Donington has a smooth track surface. It's can be quite difficult to find a quick set up there so that presents a challenge - particularly in the very fast Craner Curves/Old Hairpin section - but if you get it right it's spectacular to watch." Car # 51 will be driven by German Klaus Graf and Brazilian Gualter Salles. The team has been working hard since Sebring on the continuing development program towards Le Mans. Several modifications have been made for the 2hr 45 minute Donington race, including a new alternator drive system and modifications to the steering system. The results of further development work will not be seen until nearer the 24 Hour event. The race begins at 12 noon on Easter Saturday, and will be shown live on Sky Sports in Europe.
